Moisturizing Your Skin from Within

The skin is the largest organ in the body, and one of the first to feel the effects of aging and nutritional deficiencies.  Today with the emphasis on personal appearance and body image, individuals spend small fortunes on lotions, creams, and other agents to soften their skin.  Topical cream may relieve dry skin temporarily but true relief comes from within.  The key to healthy skin is proper hydration within the cells, and essential fatty acids on the membrane to keep water inside of cells.

The American diet causes many nutritional deficiency today.  The common nutritional deficiencies are iron, chromium, folic acid, magnesium, the B-vitamins, and essential fatty acids.   Essential fatty acids provide the building materials for healthy cells.  Indications of a deficiency are dry skin and hair, hair loss, infertility, PMS, acne, eczema, and immune impairment to name a few.  Cracked skin on the heels is a strong indication as well.

Where do essential fatty acids come from?

The American diet is generally rich in Omega-6 fatty acids, which come from animals as well as vegetable oils such as corn, sunflower, and safflower.  However, it is lacking Omega-3 fatty acids.  Good sources of omega-3 fatty acids include sesame, canola, olive, and peanut oils, flaxseed, tuna, avocados, wild-caught salmon, mackerel, and walnuts.

The essential fatty acids are a great anti-cancer and anti-oxidant supplement.  If using supplements, chose one that is as pure a possible and has no fillers in it.
